TIPS

Running/Walking in the cold:
1. Dress in layers and try to stay dry. By dressing in layers, they will be able to take off or add a piece of clothing as their body temperature increases or the weather conditions change.
2. Make sure whatever you wear on your lower body allows you to move freely. Jeans are too tight and restrict the legs. Also if the clothing item is too loose, you’ll have to pull them up every 2 steps, which is not ideal in a race.

Running/Walking in the heat:
1. Participants should wear clothing that is light in color and material to avoid overheating
2. Always wear sunscreen. On hot days it is a good idea to wear sunglasses and a hat with a visor.
3. Drink plenty of water, before, during and after the run.

Physical Activity can …

  • Help you meet friends
  • Improve Physical self-esteem
  • Achieve a healthy weight
  • Increase relaxation
  • Build strong bones and strengthen muscles
  • Strengthen the heart
  • Increase energy levels
  • Always use the stairs. Don’t even think about using an escalator or an elevator.

Here are some ideas to help you get started.
Decide to take the first step – It is all up to you – And YOU can do it!

    • Instead of getting a drive to school, to the park, or to a friend’s house.
    • Walk! Run! Bike!
    • Take the dog for a walk. If you don’t have a dog, ask a neighbor if you can walk their dog.
    • Play sports
    • Try something new: dance class, aerobics, yoga.

    Everyday Tips

    • Get your family to go camping. You can pitch a tent; gather firewood, bike, walk, and swim.
    • Rake the leaves – then JUMP in them!
    • Canoe or kayak for a whole afternoon.
    • Make a family or neighborhood treasure hunt
    • Wash the car – have a water fight while you’re at it!
    • Play TWISTER.
    • Build an obstacle course in the basement or garage on a rainy day.

    Parents get Involved

    • Get off the couch, get active and live a healthier lifestyle with your kids. In this technology crazed world that we all live in, it is important to remember there are little things that we could all do to stay active. Below are some tips for you and your family.
    • Motivate your kids. Become a role model. If you’re involved, your child is more likely to get involved. It will also increase the amount of quality time you get to spend with your child.
    • Take it one step at a time. Encourage your child to swim, bike or play a sport/game with some friends.
    • On a rainy day, have a dance off.
    • Take a 10 minute break from homework, watching television, playing video games or sitting at the computer, to do some stretching.
    • Try a reward system.
    • Go biking for 30 minutes = 30 minutes of television.
    • Playing/Running around for 30 minutes = 30 minutes of computer time
    • Use Physical activity as a reward for a good job or helping out, instead of food.
    • Physical Activity can decrease the risk of obesity, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease in their adult life. So while you’re getting your kids healthy, you can get yourself healthy.
    • Buy toys or equipment that promote physical activity
    • Park the car AS FAR AWAY from the entrance as possible
    • At a family reunion, have a treasure hunt or make up your own Olympic games.
